My heart was in the right place. . . I had stashed some Far Far Away unicorn fabric last year, saving it for a rainy day.  And my rainy day came when, after years of waiting, one of my best girlfriends from college finally got her adoption referral.  So I broke out this fabric and I have to say the double gauze is kind of heavenly to sew on.  But I just cannot make this orange work into something cute for little girls.

Mia is modelling because even though she has almost two years on this baby, she's only got about four pounds on her!  So the skirt is short here but will probably be tea length on little Miss Amanda.  The top is the Oliver + S Swingset tunic and the skirt is MADE's Market Skirt - pockets + applique.  Both patterns turn out cute garments with good proportions, I think.

So the big question - is some part of this salvageable as a gift?  As you can see, together they don't work and that applique will be completely covered up (maybe for the better) once this is on a roly poly bundle of joy.  What should I pair these orange unicorns with?  I'm thinking maybe brown & white ticking stripe or seersucker?  Or maybe I just drank the kool-aide on this line of fabrics.  Sigh.

I think they're totally cute as separates. I would love to make that top for my girl to wear with jeans, and the skirt? totally adorable. you're just being your own worst critic.

Not certain how big the baby is, but what about making the top into a bubble romper that snaps at the crotch? It has the volume and length to do so as long as the babe will still be little this summer. :) And the skirt would look adorable with a white or yellow tee. I love buying Old Navy bodysuits and embroidering them to match the skirts I make Lily. Good luck!

The top is adorable! It'd be so cute with some little jeans. What if you bought a plain cute t-shirt/onesie and appliqued something onto it to match the skirt. I think they are a totally great gift. Nothing un-cute about it.

You all are so smart. I'm always overcomplicating everything. I think the top would be cute with jeans, too! I guess I just had "outfit" in my head and couldn't get away from that.

I'm thinking I'll just send the top and a couple of these "best bibs" I'm making and call it a day. Whew.

Picky, picky, picky! Well, you can send the skirt to me, then! My Ada would love it! Ha!

Seriously, though, I am probably going to have to rip that applique idea off bigtime. :)

Hey, Kris. You've been busy!

I love both of these pieces but agree that they don't go together well. I think the top is ADORABLE and would look awesome with jeans or cute summer pants. I like Sewing Mama's idea about a bubble romper as well. The skirt is also cute - maybe pair it with a more slim-lined top that is made out of the same fabrics the skirt is.

Chris, I will mail that skirt to you if you want it! I'm not sure how old your daughter is but it does have buttonhole elastic so at least the waist is adjustable. Shoot me an email if you want!
